What constitutes original artwork?
Original artwork is produced from a blank support (canvas, paper or other surface) through the application and manipulation of a chosen medium or mediums by the artist. This is a very broad spectrum... from finger-painting to originals composed on computer screens.
It's almost easier to explain what original is not. It is not something that has been mechanically reproduced from an earlier painting or photograph. This would not include a collage, which might encompass bits that may have been mechanically reproduced; a collage is still an original artwork. It WOULD, however, include painting over a full page print... the end result is simply an enhanced print, not an original. An original is a one-of-a-kind…even if the artist has previously painted a rendition of the same piece…each painting is still an original. |
